Facilities
- St John’s Hospice provides a comfortable, caring environment with ten fully refurbished single rooms, each with an en-suite bathroom and private garden access. Two rooms can be converted into doubles if preferred.
- We have an open visiting policy, allowing family members to visit any time, day or night. There are also facilities for a small number of relatives to stay overnight, plus a comfortable relatives lounge, kitchen, and dining area.
- Meals are home-cooked and healthy, with refreshments available at all times. Patients and relatives are also welcome to bring their own food.
- Each room has its own TV and radio, and there are communal TVs in social areas.
- Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hospice, and patients can use their mobile phones, tablets, and laptops, while being considerate of others.
- We offer a hairdresser service for inpatients. Simply speak to a member of the nursing team to arrange.
- St John’s is a smoke-free zone, in line with the no-smoking policy of Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust.
- Our new day hospice facility offers a spacious environment with a lounge, activity area, conservatory, treatment rooms, and dining room.
- There is also a chapel open 24 hours a day for quiet reflection.
- For convenience, St John’s offers free parking with disabled spaces at the main entrance, and additional parking available at the front, back, and within the grounds of Tickhill Road Hospital.
Length of stay
The length of stay at St John’s Hospice depends on the reason for admission and the patient’s individual needs. Due to high demand, indefinite stays are not possible.
What to expect
Upon arrival, you will be shown to your room and given information about the facilities. A doctor and nurse will assess your needs, discuss your reason for admission, and plan your care.
Our nurses provide 24-hour care in rotating shifts, while doctors are available weekdays from 9am to 5pm, with an on-call service for out-of hours, weekends and holidays.
You will be assigned a specialist palliative care consultant who visits Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 9:30am to midday. Family members are welcome to attend these rounds. On Wednesday mornings, a multidisciplinary meeting reviews treatment plans for all patients.
We work closely with a range of allied health professionals, including:
- physiotherapists
- occupational therapists
- speech and language therapists
- dieticians
- social workers
They are available to visit the unit and help with your care if needed.
If you have any special requirements, such as a specific diet, home comforts, or a request for a pet visit, please inform a member of the team.
