What to do in an emergency
Immediate action required: Call 999 or go to the emergency department now if:
- You or someone you know requires immediate assistance for serious or life-threatening emergency mental or physical health.
- You have seriously harmed yourself, for example, by taking a drug overdose.
A mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a medical emergency.

24 hours a day, 7 days a week
If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, feeling suicidal and in need of urgent support to keep you or a loved one safe, then please phone crisis support for free on the numbers below:
- RDaSH crisis line: 0800 804 8999 or call 111 and select the mental health option.
What happens when I call for help?
The phone will be answered by NHS call handling staff, who will take your details and the reason for your call, forward this on to your local Crisis team who will call you back.
Who can call?
You can call for yourself, or someone else. NHS111 is for all ages, including children and young people and those with neurodevelopmental needs.

If you aren’t able to make the call yourself, then anyone can call on your behalf, for example a friend, carer, loved one or even a GP. You can also access NHS111 online (opens in new window).
The service is available to anyone, currently living across the whole of England and facing a mental health crisis, which could include:
- changes to your mood
- withdrawing from people (close family, friends, or work colleagues)
- having increased thoughts about your life not being worth living
- excessive worry
- feeling out of control or unable to cope
- feeling anxious about leaving the house
- hearing voices or seeing things that others can’t
- thinking about harming
