Richard Banks, Director of Health Informatics

As director of health informatics, Richard is responsible for providing the environment for a secure, accessible technical infrastructure; a data led organisation; and a culture of digital innovation, in support of care delivery and the patient pathway.

Richard started work in local government in Sheffield in the late 1980s. His NHS career started in 1993 when he joined the Family Health Services Authority, providing support to the development of primary care in some of the most deprived communities in the city, using the opportunities afforded by GP fundholding. He continued working in Sheffield, next at the newly merged health authorities in a secondary care service commissioning role, before moving to healthcare provision. In 2000 Richard joined us, helping to plan and facilitate the improvement of the care environment across the trust, embodied in new inpatient facilities in Scunthorpe and Doncaster.

He joined the Executive team and trust board in 2003. Richard helped ensure that the trust achieved foundation status in 2009, helping to establish the trust within the local community. In recent years he has taken the opportunity to take forward his passion for informatics, working with colleagues to provide the foundational, data, IT infrastructure and governance on which the trust is able to base its clinical and corporate services. He has completed the King’s fund top manager programme and holds both a bachelor of arts and master of science degree.
