Anxiety is common in children and young people and can affect their daily life, but support and coping strategies can help.
Tips for parents and carers
Here are some ways to support a child with anxiety:
- remember that anxiety is normal and expected in children
- praise and reward brave and positive behaviours while giving less attention to undesirable behaviours
- be specific with praise, such as saying, “I really like it when you share nicely”
- encourage participation and try to reduce avoidance of feared situations by making avoidance less appealing
- talk to school staff about what strategies work well and what does not
- maintain a routine to increase predictability, but allow some flexibility so children can manage change
- support a balanced diet and regular exercise to help burn off excess energy, also avoid caffeine
- practice mindful breathing together to promote relaxation
- set aside a short, specific time each day for worries and use a creative way to let them go, like a “worry monster”
- be mindful of how you communicate your own anxiety, as children pick up on this
- promote independence in daily tasks to build confidence
- avoid offering too much reassurance and instead ask guiding questions, such as, “what are you worried about?” and “why do you think this is making you feel anxious?
- validate and normalise your child’s worries so they feel understood and supported in school and daily life
Tips for professionals
Here are some ways to help students manage anxiety:
- normalise anxiety by explaining that everyone experiences it to some extent
- teach students that a little anxiety can help with performance, but too much can make studying harder
- encourage them to talk to someone they trust and remind them that there is always someone who understands
- notice any changes in their behaviour
- remind students to be kind to themselves and schedule breaks while studying
- promote self-care by encouraging activities that help them relax, such as taking a bath, going for a run, spending time with loved ones, or video calling friends
- suggest using study schedules with planned breaks to create a sense of achievement
- if a student is having a bad day and struggling with anxious thoughts, encourage them to forgive themselves and focus on their achievements
- ensure they are eating regularly, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding too much caffeine
- talk about the importance of good sleep routines and encourage at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night
- teach them relaxation techniques and positive imagery to help with sleep
- if they are struggling to manage anxiety, guide them to focus on their senses, what they can see, hear, smell, taste, or touch to help shift their attention

- establish a consistent bedtime routine by doing the same activities in the same order before bed
- create a cool, calm, and low-stimulus environment to help with relaxation
- remove electronic devices such as tablets and phones to reduce distractions
- encourage reading or being read to as part of the bedtime routine
- check for noise and light levels in the bedroom, ensuring it is not too bright or too dark
- promote outdoor activity, especially in the morning, to support natural melatonin production
- limit caffeine intake from drinks like tea, coffee, and soft drinks
- encourage positive thoughts at bedtime by reflecting on achievements or things to look forward to
